Today was one of those days when you just don't know what is going to happen. Normally, I like that type of chaos; but when you are traveling around a kid with you, we look for a little more certainty in the travel plans. Here is how the day rolled out:
Since it was Sunday, we decided to go to church with the family we met in Seaside yesterday. We woke up late (again) and ran and grabbed some food at the Osprey Cafe (normally wouldn't put a link in but their food was that good!). To give you an idea of how nice of a weekend it was, the church attendance was usually around 140 people but today was almost 400! During church, I found myself glued to the weather forecast which had been calling for rain midday but clearing up by 3:00. I figured that would work--we would get a late start but stay dry. As church progressed, the chance of rain kept going down and was supposed to pass by 1:00. So we got back to Neil's house, packed up and got on the bikes just after 2:00.
And then we looked up.
You just know when you are looking at rain clouds. Even before we left the driveway, I felt the drops. I quickly pulled out the stupid weather.com and what was "clear" just hours earlier now was calling for a weather system to pass through our route for the next couple hours. Knowing we couldn't really wait much longer, we strapped on the bike fenders, threw on extra clothing and took off into the unknown.
The route today took us through some really hilly terrain with three sustained climbs. On all of them, we got wet. Some of the time, we were underneath a tree canopy and avoided the rain, and at times it was more like a mist. But when you were going downhill, the water came at you and it was a bit chilly. Nonetheless, I think that today was my favorite leg so far in that the scenery was just unreal. We had a fun time looking at the Goonies film locations (we just finished watching the movie in fact), and the late afternoon made for some really pretty reflections on the water in different spots. Overall, we didn't rush and made it into Bay City/Tillamook around 7:00.
If there is one thing I want to highlight today, it would be Sheltered Nook on Tillamook Bay. When I was first planning our trip, Dee Harguth, the owner, graciously offered us a night to stay here in one of the tiny homes as her contribution to helping us raise money for kids with cancer. I highly encourage you to check out our Vlog link above which shows how awesome this place is. You cannot imagine better hospitality than what Dee and Hank offer (and THANK YOU for the fresh strawberries as well!). Oh, and when Hank said the beds were comfortable, he wasn't lying! I can't wait to bring the family back for a longer stay!
Ok, wrapping up. Tomorrow is a long day. We plan on going to the Tillamook Cheese Factory in the morning and then going the 75 miles down to Newport, OR. Our route is away from the coast for most of the day with some pretty large climbs mixed in. Also, we are trying to Vlog more so please check out the footage from today. I'm an amateur video splicer so be patient. I still have 24 more days to get it right.
Thanks for the well wishes and comments and DONATIONS you have given us on the road so far! Bikingthecoast@gmail.com
