Wind. It sucks. Or blows--either one. You have seen me write about it previously and lament about the suffering it inflicts upon us. When we rode over the bridge with all the friends, they got a glimpse of how it sometimes wants to push you off your bike. Well, we had an entire day of it--for 51 solid miles. And it wore us down to nothing. Here's what went down yesterday:
We stayed the night in Hotel Via and had a fantastic stay. Raquel stuck around and had breakfast before a late start on the bikes--after 11:00. We had kind of a fun ride through the city taking a bunch of roads I would never otherwise be on and for the most part, drivers were very courtesous of us on bikes. Then the road turned upward and we had to climb out towards Skyline Dr. Whenever you see a road call "Skyline Dr.," you know it isn't going to be on the waterfront. And sure enough, we had a grind to get to it. What was worse, when we climbed out of the city, that gusting wind was enough to stop us in our tracks.
I would love to say that we enjoyed the ride to the Pigeon Point Hostel. We didn't. And to make it worse, all my promises to Katelyn of at least stopping at a cafe in Half Moon Bay for hot chocolate and lunch were pretty much squashed because EVERYTHING seems to close at 2:00 on the coast--it is crazy! We finally found an Italian spot that was open and had really good pizza and really bad hot chocolate. Oh well.
20 miles up the road we pulled into the Pigeon Point Hostel. Having never stayed at a hostel previously, I had low expectations. The place was really nice however! Katelyn got to make lots of new friends with the other adults staying there and slept in the "girls" room while I bunked in the boys room next to the guy with the C-pap machine--fun. We also got to get in the hot tub on the cliff overlooking the water and attend a lecture about the history of the lighthouse. Would I go stay there again? Absolutely!
As for today: Father's Day and Katelyn's 14th birthday. We only have 28 miles to Santa Cruz so are leaving early to hopefully get there by 10:00. Then we get to go hang out at the Boardwalk and play thanks to the staff of the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk--their way of thanking us for the ride! They also set up an interview with a local TV station so we will do that this afternoon as well.
Almost time for fun! Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there!

This. This is what made the ride melt away. Sea lions barking on the rocks behind us and a 30 minute session in the hot tub on the cliff overlooking the point--awesome! |
Pigeon Point--the most westerly point of the United States south of San Francisco |
getting of Highway 1 and taking some trails |
Starting the ride today in the city--climbing to the top in order to leave it behind! Grueling! |
Checking out some of the local art work in the city. |
