Finding a Reason to Ride!
First, a quick update: this was a tough training week. Our household has been sick and Katelyn has been dealing with a pretty bad cold. She was unable to ride until Wednesday when I had her ride in the group ride. After 8 miles, she was really not feeling so well so we peeled off to cut the ride to 15 miles or so. On the way back, she at least felt good enough to pet some cows--something she claimed has been on her bucket list. Anyway, I'm really hoping she will be feeling better this coming week.
So, when I started putting our coastal ride together, I did it because I wanted to remember my grandpa and I wanted to have a great adventure with my daughter. Notice the "I's" above. It was all about me. Not that my reasons are bad or entirely selfish, it is just that I really haven't shifted the focus beyond ourselves and our own preparation needs.
About a month ago, Katelyn came home from school and told me she thought we ought to ride for some sort of charity. I gave it a little thought but ultimately decided that it would be too time consuming to figure out and that we would just ride for the sake of riding. She persisted, however, so I have kept my eyes open just in case something worked out. Then, earlier this week something awesome fell into our laps. We came across a website promoting "The Great Cycling Challenge." The challenge is an annual event to see how many miles individuals or teams can bike over the month of June. Was this timing fortuitous or what?!? It just so happened that we already will be riding a pretty good number of miles in June already--some 1,700 of them to be more accurate. And the Great Cycling Challenge was already connected to a really awesome charity: The Children with Cancer Research Fund
Quick side note here: my oldest daughter Khiara was dating a young man while in high school when, during his senior year, he was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. He went through rounds of treatment and courageously battled the weakness and sickness as he tried to recover. He was one of the fortunate ones who was able to recover but it was a sobering truth to realize that cancer can show up in anyone--regardless of age. So it seems fitting that this cycling charity fits so perfectly into our ride down the coast and gives us an even more valuable reason to ride!
I've never been good at this next part, but if you so feel inclined to support our cycling team (of two), and would be willing to donate on behalf of our ride, we would be incredibly grateful by your generosity. We have set an ambitious goal of $5,000 to raise by the time we hit Mexico. Plus, we will ride that much harder knowing that our job of pedaling is easy compared to the recovery of those whom the donations are supporting. HOWEVER, even if you are not able to donate monetarily, please PLEASE continue to follow our ride and share in the journey. We need encouragement just as much as donations!

With that, I will wrap this up. We have lots of riding to do and only 50 days left to get ready! Stay tuned for next week's blog when Katelyn will be taking over the blog post. I really have no idea what to expect from that girl! Happy riding everyone!
